【访学成功案例】从国内200+大学到美国TOP30院校访学offer,一篇精美简历缔造的神话

6月末,我们接到Mr.Wang的咨询电话,希望我们能帮他申请美国Top50院校的访问学者。Mr.Wang从清华大学读完MBA后,就一直在云南民族大学任教,有接近10年的市场相关工作经验,但是苦于没有出国深造的经历,让他在事业上很难再上一层楼。

希尔的专家跟Mr.Wang沟通后,得知Mr.Wang的研究方向是市场营销-消费者心理,话说这个专业申请访问学者相对别的专业来说比较有难度(中国人申请的太多了,名额有限),要是Top50的名校,名额就更是寥寥无几了。但是希尔海外教育相信,只要有求学的热情和诚意,一定有机会打动国外的教授,迈出国际求学的第一步,因此,我们信心满满的开始了申请工作。

访问学者的申请不同于留学申请,申请者需要有一篇让对方教授过目不忘的简历,写一个好的简历,对申请访问学者的重要性不言而喻。它是成功的基石、出发的基点、申请的基础。

当时Mr.Wang提供的简历不够专业,结构不够清晰,甚至还有大段不太通顺的句子,英语不够地道。而且“发表文章”放的是压缩拉伸后的图片,格式比例不当,造成强烈的纵向拉伸感。所以我们的申请专家第一时间便帮Mr.Wang重新制作了一份简历。下图中左边是Mr.Wang原来的简历,右边是经过我们专家重新制作的简历,晒出来给大家对比下:

下面给大家科普一下怎样制作出一个好的简历,小编主要总结有以下2点:

1.能够全面而有重点地展示自己。

所谓全面,就是要把与申请密切相关的各种有效信息都放进去,这些信息主要包括姓名、出生年月(或年龄)、性别、婚姻状况(外国人还是蛮关心这个的)、联系方式、教育经历、研究兴趣、科研经历、论文著作等。一般来说,以上信息是必需的,缺乏任何一项都会造成信息缺失,有心的外方导师若看不到这些信息,可能会觉得你有所隐瞒、诚信度不高。

所谓有重点,就是要在简历中重点展示自己在所申请专业领域内的优势。请注意,这里的优势不仅是自己的优势,而且包括组织(即自己所在研究机构)的优势。自己的优势,主要包括上过什么牛校、发过什么牛论文、做过什么牛项目、得过什么高级别的奖励等;组织的优势,则是申请者容易忽视,但外方导师却极为看重的。所有合作均是以利益为前提的,若你所在机构对外方导师而言毫无价值,那么你所在机构的人员,也就是你自己,对他来说也是没有价值的,你也就是个利益无关人员。很难想象外方导师会接受一个利益无关人员作为访问学者/博士后。

2.能够特别地展示自己。

特别地展示自己,就是展示自己的特点。何谓特点?就是与别人不一样的亮点。这些亮点主要包括:各种能力、社会任职及相关组织资源、品格性格。若能在简历中添加以上亮点,可使自己的形象更加立体,并可传达“我不仅是个学者,我更是个生活家”的信息,无疑这会增加简历的说服力。

S美女是我们的一位客户,她在美国communitycollege完成本科学习,并拿到了bachelor学位,但这个学位对于留美工作来说显然是不够的,因此她找到我们帮助,希望申请美国大学business方向的硕士。

了解客户信息后,我们的留学专家开始紧锣密鼓的进行评估,虽然这位mm的GPA不错(4.0),且已经移民有绿卡,但是GMAT比较低(640),学校很一般,这些对于申请来说都是硬伤。经过综合评估和地域限制,我们为该mm选择了三所学校进行申请,并经过努力,最终拿到了University of Connecticut的offer

你的PS你做主

留学中,打动对方的方式有很多,而PS无疑是最正式、最直接的一种,但同时也是最难的一种。在确定学校之后,我们的留学专家立刻就三所学校的PS要求和题目,进行了深入的研究,就每篇essay的题目,启发、鼓励S回忆相关的经历,并从中筛选、提炼闪光点。

比如某所学校有一篇essay要求表现申请者的组织管理能力,S一开始想不到具体的事例,我们的留学专家反复与她沟通,请她回忆过去几年参加过的社团、集体活动等,并回忆自己在这些活动中发挥的角色。最终发掘到许多值得浓墨重彩的案例,不仅写出了精彩、生动的essay,也让S自己从总结过去的经验中获得了许多成长和进步。

在希尔,我们只会鼓励客户从自己的经历中去发掘闪光点,而不会生编硬造,虚构事实,因为,只有自己的故事才最真实,只有自己的故事才最打动人心。

由于essay写的非常出彩,虽然S的背景并不突出,但她依然获得了三家目标学校的面试机会,为申请成功迈出了最为关键的一步。

功夫在题外

除了认真准备官方的命题,我们的留学专家也在题目外下了不少功夫,希望能够用多一点的努力,换取高一点的成功概率,不让每一个客户的辛苦白费。

面试的准备:进入面试后,我们的留学专家基于公司多年的申请经验,整理出所有可能会被问到的题目,要求S进行回答,再由我们的专家指导她进行修改,为了迎战几十分钟的面试,面试问题的整理修改花了整整4天的时间

面试的技巧:除了问题的准备,我们的留学专家留意到S的艺术背景和特长,建议她为将要给她面试的教授亲手制作了一幅卡通自画像,给面试官留下了非常深刻良好的印象。

套磁也要专业:每所学校的申请要求不同,有些学校只需要一篇PS,给申请人的展示机会有限,这个时候就需要我们采取其他方式去尽量展示自己的优势。我们不采用泛泛而谈的邮件进行套磁,而是拿出准备essay的劲头来编辑邮件作为套磁信,表示自己有很多其他的经历和优势需要得到充分的展示,也因此给校方留下了非常深刻的印象。

成功发表SCI , 看希尔专家如何帮助客户“影响因子”翻番

经过长达3个月的反复修改、辅导、跟踪,终于将客户的文章发表在Optics Communications 杂志(影响因子1.5)上,这篇文章客户本来的目标是Microwaveand Optical Technology Letters杂志(影响因子0.6)的,但是没有把握,不想让自己的科研成果被低估的他抱着试一试的心态找到了我们,并由此开始了这次愉快的合作。

虽然经过我们的努力让这位客户的科研成果实现了该有的价值,但我们的心中却无法完全释然。看到文章的那一刻,我们的编辑就发现,这篇文章犯得仍然是国内科研工作者的通病,这让我们更有信心帮他完成修改完成,也让我们非常痛心,不知道还有多少人因为不懂得科研论文的写作风格、技巧而让自己的科研成果大打折扣。在这里,我们将在这篇科研文章修改中的主要技巧分享给大家,希望更多的人能够为自己付出的辛苦争取到更公正的回报。

第一个大的技巧是语言。

国内很多科研工作者并非native speaker,而很多大学、科研院所也不会重视这方面的培训和学习,因此许多文章在英语写作上不符合国外编辑的阅读习惯,既不能做到充分表达自己的思路、成果,也不能快速吸引编辑的注意。我们的很多客户文章,常常在标题上就输给了国外的投稿者。Hills的科研编辑们都是英语母语背景,在这方面有着非常丰富的经验和先天优势。

事实上,除了标题之外,科研文章的文字从语法、格式、表达习惯、严谨性等各个方面都有着自己独特的要求,这需要写作者不仅熟悉自己的文章,还要对目标期刊的行文习惯有深入的了解。对大多数科研工作者来说,了解每个期刊的特点几乎是不可想象的,但Hills专家中有不少本身就是各大期刊的审稿人,对于期刊的语言习惯有着本能的敏感,改写起来自然是得心应手。

第二个大的技巧是图片的修改。

图片是整篇文章中的精华部分,是繁复实验结果的提炼与浓缩。如果能用整洁美观的图片抓住审稿人的眼球,给审稿人一个好的第一印象,那么文章的通过率会大大提高。我们的编辑专家拥有丰富的期刊审阅经验,对于什么样的图片能够更加“信,达,雅”地呈现文章中最重要的信息,有着最为准确的判断。

这篇文章的客户给我们的图片格式不能编辑,我们通过跟客户沟通,得到了原始的实验数据,并对图片进行了重新的构图和美化,调整了图片格式、比例、颜色搭配、标注字体等,使得整篇文章风格更加一致,更加美观大方。

在图片编辑中,我们的编辑还仔细阅读了目标期刊对图片的要求,尤其是图片格式、分辨率,颜色模式、尺寸等要求,通过这些细节更好地向审稿人呈现出撰稿人专业、严谨的形象。
